History of Charminar
Charminar was built in 1591 by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah, the fifth ruler of the Qutb Shahi dynasty. The dynasty ruled the Golconda region before Hyderabad became its new capital. Charminar became the central landmark of the developing city.
Why Was Charminar Built?
Historians connect Charminar with the foundation of Hyderabad and the beginning of a new period in Islamic history. Several traditional stories also explain its construction.
One popular account says the monument marked the end of a plague outbreak. Another connects it with the ruler's prayers for the city's people. These explanations are widely repeated, but the exact reason for construction remains uncertain.
The monument's foundation inscription is translated as a prayer for the city to fill with people, like a river filled with fish. This supports the connection between Charminar and the foundation of Hyderabad.
Important Historical Developments

1670: One minaret reportedly suffered damage after a lightning strike and was repaired.

Charminar remains a major symbol of Hyderabad's history. It also represents the architectural and cultural traditions of the Qutb Shahi period.
The monument and other Qutb Shahi landmarks appear on UNESCO's Tentative List as part of a proposed heritage grouping. This is not the same as being individually inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
5. Architecture & Design of Charminar
Charminar is known for its square plan, four large arches, and four tall minarets. Its design reflects Indo-Islamic architecture, with Persian influences and decorative elements associated with the Deccan region.
Four Arches and Minarets
Each side has a large pointed arch facing a main direction. These openings connect the monument visually with the historic roads around it. The four minarets rise from its corners and give the building its distinctive outline.
The square structure measures approximately 20 metres on each side. Official tourism descriptions place the minarets at about 48.7 metres high.
Materials and Decoration
The monument uses granite and lime mortar. Its exterior features carved details, decorative stucco work, balconies, and ornamental patterns. The minarets have several levels separated by decorative bands.

A mosque occupies the western upper portion of the monument. The structure also contains prayer spaces and an internal staircase. Access to upper levels is subject to visitor arrangements and restrictions.
Charminar's design combines religious functions with the role of a central city landmark. Its form has become closely associated with Hyderabad's identity.
